The clubs cup is a tournament held amongst the different associations which have enough members to form a soccer team. The goal is to create a socializing environment for the students between and within the associations while at the same time enjoying a sport which can be at the same time a great form of exercise. The GSA competed but unfortunately didn’t manage to advance to the later stages of the tournament. However, it was a fun way to exercise and bond with other members.

General Meeting and Pub Night
On the 21st of September the GSA held their annual general meeting and pub night for all new and senior members who gathered to discuss the 2016-17 year for an overview of some GSA initiatives and upcoming events. The general meeting also served for a chance to meet our exec team and learn more about them and the GSA. Another function of this meeting was for students to run as directors for this year’s council. Candidates all provided a short speech and were elected by anonymous ballot voting.
Following the meeting, members headed to O’Grady’s pub, a local UofT bar for drinks and snacks. Pub night allowed for everyone to mingle and catch up with new and prior members. Karaoke was also the hit of the night with multiple members doing their best rendition of classic and new songs. Overall it was a great kick off for the start of the year and a fun night for all.

Clubs Cup and Street Fest 2016
The launch of the Hellenic language program
An exciting big step was taken by the Hellenic language student community of the University of Toronto and the Munk School of Global Affairs with the official launch of the Hellenic language program! A ceremony was held at the Munk School where speeches were made about the importance of this program and what its future at UofT looks like. The official signing of the agreement took place and the presentation of a cheque was also presented. A special thank you to the Hellenic Heritage Foundation for their support for this program and as students we look forward to taking many courses to further our love and knowledge of our Hellenism.
Indoor Clubs Cup 2016
On Saturday April 2nd, the GSA competed for the first time in UofT’s annual indoor soccer Clubs Cup. The team had a great showing, and despite all odds against them rallied to finish second place. The team got off to a rough start losing their first game 0-2 to UTICA and tying the Nigerians 0-0. With the luck of a coin flip the team was able to move on to the quarterfinals and pulled off a shocking 1-0 upset in a rematch with UTICA, sending the heavy favourites home early. In the semi-finals with no substitutes the GSA continued to defy the odds and defeated OLAS 2-1, making their way into the final round. Unfortunately, their run of good fortune ended when they played against the Egyptians in the finals. A tired squad put up a valiant effort but lost in a tight 3-2 battle. The GSA would like to thank everyone who came out and both supported and competed for the team. Hopefully next year we will be able to bring the trophy home!
Independence Day Parade 2016
On April 3rd, 2016 SEF Toronto participated in the parade held in celebration of Greek Independence Day. Although it was a rather chilly day, we had a great time and turnout, ending our day with a meal at Astoria on Danforth with the members of the HSAs at York and Ryerson. Thank you to everyone who came out to march in honour of 25η Μαρτίου!

Greek Week 2016
From March 14th to March 18th, the GSA hosted their annual “Greek Week”; a weeklong event consisting of many delicious activities that promote Hellenism and the association. Monday was our “Gyro Day” at Bahen, sponsored by Messini Authentic Gyro, an event that is loved by all our members, along with the hungry students of UofT! Our first day of Greek Week was concluded with a Debates Night, where all candidates in our executive council elections spoke and answered questions from our members. Tuesday’s festivities included a bake sale at Medci, where all proceeds went to support the Nea Genia performing group. The most anticipated event of the week, Wednesday’s event was the lamb roast! Drawing in a large crowd taking photos, videos and learning about this Greek tradition throughout the day, our execs roasted a lamb on the UTSU lawn; the lamb was later enjoyed by the members who came out. Winding down from the excitement of the Wednesday, our GSA hosted a Study Jam on Thursday, with many of our members vising our office throughout the day to study, prepare for tests and enjoy some yummy snacks! The final day of Greek Week, Friday, was the day for any members to cast their last minute election votes.
Overall, Greek week was a great success and was enjoyed by member and non-member alike. Congratulations to all who were elected for the 2016/2017 executive council and hope to see everyone at our 2017 Greek Week!
