Essay Contest Winner: Nicholas Arruda

Congratulations to Nicholas Argyris Arruda, the well-deserved winner of the GSA essay writing competition!

Nicholas’ essay stood out for its exceptional organization, clear argument, and poignant connection to the critical issue of ignorance surrounding the Pontic Greek genocide. Delving into historical facts, including brutal statements by Kemalists, the essay skillfully explores the wide-ranging impacts of the genocide—from the struggles within the Greek community to global recognition issues, Turkey’s denial, and thought-provoking parallels with the Armenian genocide. It’s a comprehensive and captivating read, connecting the past to present global challenges and serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging history. This thought-provoking masterpiece reveals early crimes against humanity that shaped genocide and ethnic cleansing—crucial insights in the face of today’s global events.

Congratulations to all who submitted their essays! Special recognition to our outstanding runners-up:

🥇 First place runner-up: Kiki Zorbas; ‘Pontian Genocide’
🥈 Second place runner-up: Angela Vastis; ‘The Role of “Earthquake Diplomacy” Between Greece and Turkey’
