Academic Night Recap

On Wednesday January 26th the GSA held its second annual academic night. It was a great success with over 60 students and 20 professionals attending!  The event was held in Hart House Music Room with free food and wine. Two engaging Greek films were shown, ‘Small Pleasures’ and ‘What is that?’ both directed by Constantin Pilavios (links below). We were very pleased to have Professor Triandofilopoulos from UTSC with us to speak about the effect of immigration on Greek identity. The lecture sparked debate among the audience for a very entertaining night!  At the end of the event we held a raffle for five $50 restaurant gift certificates across Toronto. Thank you to everyone who helped put together the event and a very special thank you to Professor Triandofilopoulos.

The GSA will be screening the classic film ‘Never on Sunday’ featuring the infamous and well loved Melina Mercouri. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Synopsis:
Ilya is Piraeus’s most popular person: an energetic prostitute, full of life and good humor. Every day, she swims at the pier, entertaining the dock hands. Sundays she has an open house with food, drink and song. Homer Thrace, an amateur philosopher from America, arrives in town to find out why Greece has fallen from ancient greatness. He decides Ilya is a symbol of that fall, so he sets out to study and to save her.

Interesting Fact:
Never on Sunday featured the first song ever to win an Oscar from a foreign film. The song was ‘Never on Sunday’.

Quote:
Homer: It’s extraordinary! Where do you learn all those languages?
Ilya: In bed.

Skate For Toys Recap

On December 22nd the Greek and Hellenic Students’ Associations from the University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University, the Next Generation Department of the Greek Community of Toronto, and the Consulate General of Greece held their first ever Skate For Toys at Ryerson skating rink. We had an amazing response from the community and this will now become an annual tradition. The weather was perfect for skating and the turnout was incredible. We appeared on CP24 twice that night. A very big thank you goes to St. George Church for serving hot chocolate and collecting a huge amount of toys from their congregation. Another thank you goes to George Panagiotoglou, Stephen Smith, Enrico Nardozi, and John Hwang for together bringing a very generous toy donation. All toy donations were collected for CP24/CHUM Christmas Wish toy drive.
