A Tribute to Theo Angelopoulos Lecture

Screen Shot 2013-03-07 at 10.58.14 PM

Theo Angelopoulos, one of the most treasured filmmakers of the 20th century, died on January 24, 2012 at the age of 76. This lecture is a tribute to the artist and his art on the occasion of the one year anniversary of his so untimely and tragic death.

Building on his own research, which includes two published books and numerous essays on Angelopoulos’ films as well as over thirty years of interviews with the director, Dr. Horton will share the nature and importance of Angelopoulos’ films with clips from films including Eternity and a Day (1998), Ulysses’ Gaze (1995), and The Weeping Meadow (2004). He will explore how Angelopoulos often brought the present, history and myth together in a single sequence or shot, thus offering us who live in a frenzied paced world, a “cinema of contemplation”, in which we as viewers are free to enter scenes and characters on a variety of levels that are not possible in the non-stop swift editing pace of most of contemporary Hollywood cinema.

Dr. Andrew Horton is the Jeanne H. Smith Professor of Film and Media Studies, University of Oklahoma. An award winning screenwriter and author of twenty seven books on film, screenwriting, literature and culture including The Films of Theo Angelopoulos: A Cinema of Contemplation (Princeton U. Press, 1999).

GSA Co-Ed Volleyball Season Recap

The Greek Students’ Association Co-Ed Volleyball Team was one of the top teams to beat in this spring intramural season. Although using their feet more than their hands, the GSA was able to place second overall with 4 wins and 1 loss, continuing on to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, GSA’s great amount of skill was not good enough during the semi-final game, in which they were eliminated.

The GSA’s stacked team had both back court and front court lineups ready for any attacks that came their way. Chris Vassos, Michael Kanopoulos, Niko Katsieris and Dimitri Kyriakakis were in the back court and did an amazing job at not only retrieving the ball but demolishing their opponents with their hits and serves. In addition to having the best men’s lineup, the GSA also had a stacked women’s lineup playing in the front court. Klia Tsiolis, Vikki Bekiaris, Vicki Nikolakakos and Danielle Tavernese were some of the best female players in the league and were able to annihilate their opponents with their tricky plays and serves.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this volleyball season and we hope to see the GSA bring home a championship title next year.

GSA Co-Ed Inner Tube Water Polo Season Recap

This spring intramural season, the Greek Students’ Association was able to participate in a Co-Ed Inner Tube Water Polo league. Inner Tube Water Polo is a variation of water polo requiring all players except for the goalie to float in inflatable tubes. Being a new team with very little experience, the GSA began with many losses under their belt, yet they did not give up. GSA’s natural competitive nature and eagerness to win allowed them to redeem themselves in the final games of the season. As emotions ran high throughout the season, the GSA was relentless and gradually became one of the fiercest teams in the pool.

The GSA’s very own Kostas Katsanevas and his explosive shots were able to lead the team to victory and great improvement later in the season. With the help of Michael Kanopoulos and his amazing goalkeeper skills the net was always kept clear and was never invaded. Dimitri Kyriakakis also played a vital role in delegating the team and challenging his opponents. Along with the aggressive male players came some very feisty female GSA players who did not cease at any opportunity to attack. With their constant willingness to attack, Nikki Yorgiadis, Vikki Bekiaris, Vicki Nikolakakos and Vicky Tsiantis were able to take on their opponents and help the GSA succeed.

Thank you to those who participated in the first GSA Co-Ed Innertube Water Polo team and we hope to see the GSA become victorious in the following years.

Bake Sale Recap

On Wednesday, January 23, The Greek Students Association held their annual bake sale at Sidney Smith. The bake sale was a huge success. Many Greek foods and desserts were sold, such as spanakopita, tiropita, baklava, cupcakes, cookies and loukoumades. The coffee station was most successful, selling regular coffee, Greek coffee and frappe. The GSA raised over 250 dollars for the NHSA. Thanks goes to everyone who helped raise this money, and of course to all the GSA members that came out and took their share of gratuity food. The GSA aspires to hold another bake sale towards the end of the semester.
