The GSA will be screening the controversial film ‘Dogtooth’ directed by Giorgos Lanthimos. Dogtooth was nominated for Best Foreign Film and has won numerous awards across Europe.

Synopsis:
A married couple and their three young adult children, a son and two daughters, live at the outskirts of a city in a large compound with a garden and a swimming pool. A tall fence surrounds the property and the children have never been on the other side of it, for they are intentionally cut off from the outside world by their parents. They are taught different meanings for everyday words. For example, they are told that a ‘zombie’ is “a small yellow flower, the ‘sea’ is a chair and the ‘telephone’ is the salt shaker. The parents show no sign to the children that their experiences are extraordinary and they promise that each child will be ready to venture outside the compound once she or he has lost a dogtooth. To guarantee the children’s submission, the parents contrast them to an unseen brother who is said to live just outside the compound, where he has been ostracized for his disobedience.

Interesting Fact:
Dogtooth is only the 5th ever Greek film to be nominated for an Oscar. The last film nominated from Greece was Ifigeneia in 1977.

Quote:
Older Daughter: Mother, what is a “cunt”?
Mother: Where did you learn that word?
Older Daughter: On a case on top of the VCR.
Mother: A “cunt” is a large lamp. For example: The “cunt” switched off and the room got dark.

OXI Day Parade Oct. 28, 2012

On Sunday October 28, the GSA was proud to march along side HSA’s of York and Ryerson in the OXI Day Parade. Braving the cold rain, the GSA proudly had 18 students marching down Danforth Ave (GreekTown) leading the other universities in the traditional parade symbolizing the day of OXI, when the Greeks said no to Italy and Mussolini in the 1940’s. Afterwards, we took all of our members and executives to Christina’s Restaurant and met up with Ryerson for a delicious feast, subsidiezed by the GSA.

We would like to thank everyone braved the cold and wet weather and marched in the parade. For photos from the parade, please see here: https://utgsa.com/gallery/oxi-parade-2012/

Halloween Havoc Recap

On Friday October 26th, the GSA in conjunction with the Hellenic Students’ Associations of York and Ryerson universities as well as Era Events, threw our 7th annual Halloween Havoc costume party. The night, filled with university students and their friends, was definitely a night to remember. As tradition, the Halloween Havoc costume party is the GSA’s biggest social event featuring a premium location on King Street, an awesome discount on premium liquor, and the best of modern Greek music mixed with North American top 40.

This year, we broke all records! We had over 325 people in attendance and sold more than 200 pre-sold tickets. This is the most we have ever had at any social or clubbing event hosted by the GSA. Thanks to CROWN Bar and Lounge located at 393 King Street West, we were able to comfortably accommodate all of our guests in a premium downtown Toronto venue. CROWN was a gorgeous venue and was decorated as a haunted asylum. We featured a pre-drink special to get all the late comers to arrive early ($4 domestic beers before 11pm), an exclusive student discounted premium bottle service package (2 bottles of grey goose and 5 free tickets for $350 taxes/tip included), and we ensured that nobody was waiting in line for more than 15 minutes.

The night was definitely one to remember. To re-live all of the moments, please check out the album in our gallery: https://utgsa.com/gallery/halloween-havoc-friday-oct-26-2012/

GSA @ Toronto FC vs Montreal Impact

On Saterday October 20, the GSA worked together with Toronto FC and BMO Field to offer a huge discount to all of our GSA members for a chance to watch Toronto FC in action at their final home game of the season. The GSA was able to bring our 10 members at a discounted price of $20 per ticket. On top of that, each member got a Free official TFC scarf with their ticket purchase. Unfortunately, TFC didn’t get the win and the match was held to a 0-0 tie.

The GSA would like to thank everyone that came out to the game and would also like to thank Toronto FC for working together with the GSA and coming up with a fun event we can offer to our members at a heavily subsidized price.

GSA @ Giorgos Mazonakis Live in Concert

On Friday October 19, the GSA was delighted to party and dance alongside Giorgos Mazonakis as he performed live at Hazleton Manor. The concert, hosted by Signature Productions, was sold out and filled Hazelton Manor to maximum capacity. Signature Productions, a new sponsor to the GSA, not only donates a portion of the concerts’ corporate sponsorships to the GSA, but offers our student members discounted prices. All GSA members were offered a discounted concert ticket for $75 (normally $150) and the executives were treated to a discounted ticket to have a table on the stage right beside the singer!

The night was a memorable one as Stelios Maximos, Paulina, and Giorgos Mazonakis stole the show. The dinner was delicious, the production was of the highest quality, all three singers were able to make the crowd go wild. Furthermore, the night before the concert, Signature Productions held an exclusive intimate meet and greet with Giorgos Mazonakis at The Local Company on the Danforth. Here, the GSA executive was invited to meet the sponsors of the concert and meet Giorgos Mazonakis.  We’ve had an excellent experiance working with Signature Productions and are excited for the event!
