Halloween Havoc Recap

On Friday October 26th, the GSA in conjunction with the Hellenic Students’ Associations of York and Ryerson universities as well as Era Events, threw our 7th annual Halloween Havoc costume party. The night, filled with university students and their friends, was definitely a night to remember. As tradition, the Halloween Havoc costume party is the GSA’s biggest social event featuring a premium location on King Street, an awesome discount on premium liquor, and the best of modern Greek music mixed with North American top 40.

This year, we broke all records! We had over 325 people in attendance and sold more than 200 pre-sold tickets. This is the most we have ever had at any social or clubbing event hosted by the GSA. Thanks to CROWN Bar and Lounge located at 393 King Street West, we were able to comfortably accommodate all of our guests in a premium downtown Toronto venue. CROWN was a gorgeous venue and was decorated as a haunted asylum. We featured a pre-drink special to get all the late comers to arrive early ($4 domestic beers before 11pm), an exclusive student discounted premium bottle service package (2 bottles of grey goose and 5 free tickets for $350 taxes/tip included), and we ensured that nobody was waiting in line for more than 15 minutes.

The night was definitely one to remember. To re-live all of the moments, please check out the album in our gallery: https://utgsa.com/gallery/halloween-havoc-friday-oct-26-2012/

GSA @ Toronto FC vs Montreal Impact

On Saterday October 20, the GSA worked together with Toronto FC and BMO Field to offer a huge discount to all of our GSA members for a chance to watch Toronto FC in action at their final home game of the season. The GSA was able to bring our 10 members at a discounted price of $20 per ticket. On top of that, each member got a Free official TFC scarf with their ticket purchase. Unfortunately, TFC didn’t get the win and the match was held to a 0-0 tie.

The GSA would like to thank everyone that came out to the game and would also like to thank Toronto FC for working together with the GSA and coming up with a fun event we can offer to our members at a heavily subsidized price.

GSA @ Giorgos Mazonakis Live in Concert

On Friday October 19, the GSA was delighted to party and dance alongside Giorgos Mazonakis as he performed live at Hazleton Manor. The concert, hosted by Signature Productions, was sold out and filled Hazelton Manor to maximum capacity. Signature Productions, a new sponsor to the GSA, not only donates a portion of the concerts’ corporate sponsorships to the GSA, but offers our student members discounted prices. All GSA members were offered a discounted concert ticket for $75 (normally $150) and the executives were treated to a discounted ticket to have a table on the stage right beside the singer!

The night was a memorable one as Stelios Maximos, Paulina, and Giorgos Mazonakis stole the show. The dinner was delicious, the production was of the highest quality, all three singers were able to make the crowd go wild. Furthermore, the night before the concert, Signature Productions held an exclusive intimate meet and greet with Giorgos Mazonakis at The Local Company on the Danforth. Here, the GSA executive was invited to meet the sponsors of the concert and meet Giorgos Mazonakis.  We’ve had an excellent experiance working with Signature Productions and are excited for the event!

First Dance Club & Movie Night

On Tuesday, October 16, the Greek Students Association held their first dance/movie night of the year in Cats Eye- Victoria College. Kalamatiano was taught during the dance portion, and after everyone indulged in pizza and refreshments, the film of the night, “Rembetiko”, was shown. This film is based on a true the true story of the popular singer Marika Ninou’s life, set in the 1920’s and manufactured into a musical drama and sweeps through 40 years. Those who attended the event were extremely enthusiastic towards both the Greek movie with English subtitles, and GSA’s popcorn machine. The GSA aspires to hold another similar event in the near future. Thanks go to all who attended, and for those who didn’t, not to worry! Undoubtedly more members will attend the next event, considering midterms were this week.

First Dance Club & Movie Night

Do you enjoy dinner and a movie? What about free dance lessons? The Greek Students Association will be hosting their first dance club & movie night of the year. On Tuesday, October 16, come to the Cat’s Eye in Victoria College between 6-10pm to indulge in our amazing greek festivities. Dance lessons will be held from 6 to 7:30pm. Our cultural and social directors will teach you the foundations of “Kalamatiano” and practice it as a group until you get it perfect!

At 7:40pm we will begin the movie presentation. We will be showing the 1983 film, “Rembetiko” with english subtitles. Pizza, popcorn, and refreshments will be provided. New members and non-Greek students are always welcome!

Rembetiko (1983): Based on a true story, this musical drama sweeps through a turbulent 40 years in popular singer Marika Ninou’s (Sotiria Leonardou) life – and in the history of Greece – starting with the singer’s birth in Smyrna, Turkey in 1917. Ninou was deported to Greece along with all the other Greeks in Smyrna when she was seven years old, and a few years later, her parents started a career as a musician and a singer in a nightclub/bar. In the short space of one decade, Ninou witnesses her father murder her mother, runs away from home, has a baby, and comes back to the nightclub to sing in an act with a childhood friend and a bouzouki player, Babis. Success finally comes, but then Ninou’s childhood friend is exiled for political reasons, and she and Babis leave for other venues. Although Ninou carries a torch for Babis, their relationship never seems to work out, and after many years and World War II go by, she sends her daughter away to a convent school and goes on a tour in America.

Rembetiko was nominated for the Golden Bear award at the 34th Berlin International Film Festival in 1984, and won the Silver Bear.[1] Sotiria Leonardou won the prize for “Best Actress” at the 1983 Thessaloniki Film Festival for her portrayal of Ninou and the film itself tied for “Best Picture”, and won three other awards as well (two “Best Supporting Actor” prizes, and one for music).
