Movie Night I & II Recaps

On November 3rd and December 2nd the GSA held their first two movie nights of the year. We first featured the classic and well loved ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’. Most of us hadn’t seen it in a while and were reminded of the hilarity of Greek family dynamics. There was a great turn out and we had lots of laughs! On our second movie night we featured the academy award winning movie ‘Z’ by world renowned director, Costa-Gavras. The film used the assassination of activist Gregoris Lambrakis as its base. It was an excellent and thought provoking film. Both movies were free for all members and food, popcorn and drinks were provided! Keep your eyes open for upcoming movie nights!

Greece Wins 2010 EU Film Festival

We at the Greek Students’ Association are please to announce that the Consulate General of Greece today is celebrating the significant victory of Greece in the 2010 Toronto European Union Film Festival. The Hon. D. Azemopoulos, Consul General thanked all his colleagues for their contribution to make this victory happen (Toronto, December 1st 2010). Greece won the 1st prize in this year’s 6th European Film Festival in Toronto thanks to the entry ”Small Crime” which was deliberately chosen to represent us in the above prestigious Festival as well as the enthusiastic response of the audience. The award was bestowed to the Hon. Dimitris Azemopoulos by his European Union Colleagues at the Italian Institute in Toronto (November 30, 2010).

OXI Parade Recap

On October 31st the GSA paraded on the Danforth to celebrate Greek OXI Day. We marched with UTSC reping our GSA sweaters with pride. Greek clubs from Ryerson, McMaster and York also paraded, including the Cypriot Association from York.

Halloween Havoc Recap

On October 29th the GSA held another wicked installment of our yearly ritual. This year our legendary Halloween party was held at Hyde lounge. Together with UTSC, York and Ryerson we had an awesome night with over 330 people attending! A special thanks goes out to DJ Kosta Stomedias and everyone who helped out across the three universities!

Clubs Cup Recap

On October 8th, the GSA produced a co-ed soccer team that represented National Team Greece at the annual Clubs Cup hosted by UTICA. Many teams participated including Team Italy, Portugal, China, Korea and other rivaling nations. It was held on King’s College Circle and was a free event. In our first game we played UTICA B and won 1-0. Then we played the Croatians and with another win beat them 2-0. Keeping our winning streak going we beat Portugal 4-0 to make it to the playoffs. With the hopes of going all the way and winning the cup we entered the first round of playoffs. Unfortunately we lost to Korea 2-1. Thanks to all our members that came out to show their support!

Raketes Tournament Recap

On September 19th the GSAs from UTM, UTSC and St. George campus hosted a Raketes Tournament at Ashbridges Bay. For many old and new members it was a fun way to learn Greek racket ball, a sport which is very popular on the beaches of Greece. Along with fun and games there was also free food and drinks for all members. Thanks to everyone who came out to our first event of the year!

UTSC Clubs Week Recap

On September 8th and 10th the GSA had an amazing booth at Clubs Week. This year we had our biggest membership sign up! We had free Greek style frappes and pastries and for all those that signed up, a free t-shirt! We had a live bouzouki player and played raketes on the street! It was loudest and funnest table there!

Greek Movie Night II

Date: Thursday December 2
Location: Hart House – North Dining Hall
Time: 7:00PM
Cost: FREE for all members! $5 for non-members (includes T-Shirt)

The GSA will be screening the academy award winning movie, ‘Z’ by world renowned director, Costa-Gavras.

Synopsis:
The film uses the 1963 assassination of leftist activist Gregoris Lambrakis as its base. (In fact, the film’s minimalist title is a reference to the Greek word ‘Zei’ – He lives.) The assassination of Lambrakis was covered up by the police and military. Although Lambrakis’s death inspired the Greek youth to push for progressive reforms in Greece, the movement was eventually stopped by the 1967 military coup d’état.

Time: 9:00AM – 4:00PM each day
Cost: ONE FREE baked good for all members. Prices range from $1.00 to $4.00 and all proceeds go to support the GSA!

Wednesday: Sidney Smith (lobby)
Friday: Medical Science Building (student common area)

Over the course of 4 days the GSA will be serving baked goods, pastries and of course Frappe!
