Conversation Club

This past Thursday the directors of the GSA hosted the second Greek “Conversation Club” of the year. The event was held in the GSA office at 21 Sussex from 1 pm to 3 pm and was well attended by members and Greek language learners of all levels. We had a great time speaking Greek, and listening to (and singing) Greek music. We also had delicious sweets! There were Loukoumades from Athens Bakery, baklava and chocolates from Serano, and φραπέδες (frappe coffees) for all à la GSA. Discussion ranged from school & work to relationships, and there were plenty of laughs involved. Students from the Modern Greek language class were also able to practice their vocabulary for the test they had in class next day. The second “Convo Club” was a great success and we look forward to hosting more in the coming weeks!

Conversation Club

The GSA will be hosting its first “Conversation Club” of 2015!

Date: Thursday, January 15, 2015
Time: 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Place: 21 Sussex Clubhouse, 4th Floor In The Lounge

The goal of the day is to have a chance to practice speaking Greek with friends and peers. We will lead introductions, and discussion of various topics in Greek. This is an excellent way to build confidence in Greek—ideal for students in the Modern Greek course -especially to prepare for the upcoming midterm- and Greek speakers of all levels. To top it off, pizza, coffee, and healthy snacks will be served!

See you all there!

Skate for Toys 2014

On TIMG_6898hursday December 18th, just a few days before Christmas, the GSA took part in a small act to give back to the community. Hosted by the HSA at Ryerson University, and with the help of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, yet another successful year of Skate for Toys was accomplished. With a great turnout of executives, members, and friends from the GSA of U of T, and the HSAs of Ryerson and York, an appreciable amount of toys were donated to the CP24 Christmas Wish Toy Drive. The participants enjoyed hot chocolate and snacks at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in an attempt to warm up before the fun began. In the bitter cold Greek music played loudly and proudly at Lake Devo Skating Rink where the participants showed off their skating skills. The night seamlessly melded the Greek and Canadian cultures, bringing together song and dance on blades and ice.

Stay tuned for our events coming up in the New Year! Especially our annual trip to MTL! We cannot wait for you to see what else is in store.

Christmas Caroling

On Monday December 22nd the GSA visited the Hellenic Hope Centre for the disabled. They sang Christmas carols in both English and Greek. The caroling troop was a huge hit: the crowd favorites were Κάλαντα and Santa Clause is Coming to Town. The GSA was received with excited applause. The visit to the Centre during the Christmas season to interact with persons with special needs was a heart warming, humbling and rewarding experience. The GSA is eager to return to the Hellenic Hope to volunteer and support the vital assistance and programming the Centre offers to individuals and families with special needs. Congratulations and thank you to those who volunteer and work at the Centre for making such support possible. Stay tuned for more volunteering opportunities in 2015!
