Hellenic Mentorship Night 2015

On Wednesday, March 4, 2015 the GSA held their second Hellenic Mentorship Night at Hart House in the East Common Room. We invited several successful Greek professionals to come out and mentor the youth here at the University of Toronto. We had a panel encompassing several fields including: education, academia, business, law, and medicine. The night was a wine cheese event, with delicious catering provided by Hart House. All of our panel members shared their inspiring and interesting stories about how they came to their future professions. After each professional had spoke about their fields, they got the chance to meet and advise the students through networking. We would like to thank the professionals who took time out of their days to bring back to the young Greek community. We would also like to thank everyone who attended the successful event. We look forward to more new and exciting events in the future!

TAChidromos

Tαχυδρόμος- is mailman in Greek. The Greek Students’ Association at the University of Toronto wished to have an outlet to deliver Greek culture and the goings on to all who wish to know. TAChidromos has three responsibilities:

1) The responsibility to clarify all information pertinent to Greek students and Greeks in general. The world is not black and white, neither is it grey; we are not fanciful university students trying to add out nothingness to the
overwhelming dim ether of subjectivity that mark the scholar who has lost his connection to his own humanity, that ‘thing’ that connects us all. The world is a barcode, subtle and nuanced, but still discoverable for all who are curious.

2) The responsibility to question the cultural, economic and political space we inhabit. If we lose the ability to question the governing powers of culture, economics and politics in Greece then we may end up with Hellas, a barely recognizable portion of Modern Greece that is slept though by Saturday Greek school students who want to study the Mediterranean nation they inhabit, but are barred from doing so by the immigrants fantasizing about a country that doesn’t exist.

3) The responsibility to inform our readers on Greek culture, economics and politics. The information in every issue of TAChidromos is cited and the authenticity is maintained to the best of human ability or is discarded. To inform is the responsibility of every publication worth reading even the diversions of media. The TAChidromos of Greek culture, economics and politics will maintain its goal to inform Greek students, Greeks and all other readers who are interested.

UTSU Unity Ball 2015

On Friday, February 27th, 2015, the GSA was represented by your executives and directors at the UTSU’s 6th Annual Unity Ball, held at the Marriott. It was a wonderful evening held in celebration for all the achievements of the various clubs and associations here at the University of Toronto. Specifically, the night highlighted the UTSU’s success in solidfying the new Student Commons on campus!

Previously, U of T was without a centralized area for the clubs and students to convene, which was quite troubling as both the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses have such facilities. Various executive teams were able to network and dance together following the delicious dinner. We are also proud to announce that for the third consecutive year, the GSA has won “Most Outstanding Executive Team”! We would like to thank all our members and sponsors for their continuous support, and we look forward to delivering more successful events in the near future.

Bounce Back From Montreal 2015: Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament

As a way to keep the Montreal spirit going, the GSA organized a volleyball tournament at the North Beach Volleyball Centre on February 20th, 2015. A variety of students from York, Ryerson and U of T came out to represent their schools. The night was filled with healthy competition and excellent camaraderie. It was great to see students from the HSAs compete with one another to relieve stress from post midterm season, as they continued to bond past SEF’s MTL 15. Members of the GSA demonstrated athleticism and worked well together, winning the tournament at the end of the night. Overall, great sportsmanship was demonstrated and we appreciate everyone who came to support us during their reading week. We anticipate more competitive sports in the near future!

Tsiknopempti 2015

SEF Toronto hosted their annual event for Tsiknopempti on Wednesday February 18th, 2015, also posing as the official SEF Montreal 2015 After party! Tskinopempti, as a Greek tradition, is the day in which large amounts of meat are consumed in a vast feast prior to Lent, the time for νηστεία! This year, however, was the first time it was held at Kefi on Danforth. Many members came out to enjoy a night of drinks and dancing. It was an amazing night where everyone relaxed after all the excitement of Montreal with our friends from York, Ryerson & UOIT! The excellent tradition of Tsiknopempti celebrations lives on. Thank you to everyone who attended. We are looking forward to more socials in the months to come and καλή Σαρακοστή!

Montreal 2015

10959594_617727778359247_5485383955910469912_nWe’re back! Every year on the February long weekend the GSA of UofT, along with the HSAs of York and Ryerson collaborate to run the most awaited event of the year: SEF Invades Montreal. This year though, we also welcomed our friends and fellow Greeks from UOIT and Western, making it one of the best trips thus far. Four days never seems like enough time, however Montreal could not have handled this group of Greek students, after midterms, ready for reading week, for even one more hour! With a few bumps on the road the group finally arrived in Montreal with only one thing in mind: OPA! Day trips to the casino and Old Montreal, as well as nightly outings to the club district, and of course Mythos, the Romeo of Montreal, made for unforgettable bonding moments, museum worthy photographs and some memorable dance moves. The success of the trip would not have been possible without the innumerable hours of work put it by the amazing presidents of U of T GSA Vikki Bekiaris, York HSA Despoina Ritsakis, Ryerson HSA Fotis Karantonis and UOIT HSA Zoe Meditskos.

The memories will never fade and the anticipation for another year is already building up. Thank you to everyone who work so hard planning the trip, and to those who continuously show their support by coming out to the SEF events that make them so successful. Here’s to 2016!
